Eric Garner grand jury decision, live reactions

Protests broke out over New York City after a Staten Island grand jury voted not to indict an NYPD officer in the death of Eric Garner, the asthmatic, overweight man who died after cops wrestled him down with an apparent chokehold during an arrest last summer.

  • A group of protesters gathered on the Brooklyn Bridge:

  • Rev. Al Sharpton held a press conference with the Garner family, during which time he called for a national march on Washington D.C. on Dec. 13.

    Gwen Carr, Eric Garner's mother:

"I am truly disappointed in this decision. I don't know what video they were watching but it's not the one we all saw."

"How can we put our trust in the justice system?"

"We need peace. We want you to rally, but we want peace. Do what you have to, but do it in peace."

"I want to thank all of you for showing support tonight, for my son who I will never see you again."

    Esaw Garner, Eric Garner's widow:

"The time for remorse is when he was on the ground saying 'I can't breathe'"

    "I don't accept [Officer Pantaleo's] apology."
