NYC Mayor holds press conference on Garner outcome
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio is speaking about the grand jury's decision.
"We have to find a way forward ... together."
"It's a very painful day" for NYC. "We're grieving .... for a man who isn't with us and should be."
"Eric Garner's father ... is in unspeakable pain."
Eric Garner's father said "there can't be violence. Eric would not have wanted violence. Violence will not get us anywhere."
"It's all of our jobs to never have a tragedy again."
"This is personal for me ... I've had to worry over the years. ... Is Dante safe? ... Is my child safe?"
"This is now a national moment of grief ... pain and searching for solutions."
"Black Lives Matter ... they're saying it because it had to be said."
"We're dealing with centuries of racism who have brought us to this day." We need to make "change that is profound and lasting."
"The truth is important here. One chapter has closed with decision of this grand jury. There are more chapters ahead ... The federal government is clearly engaged and poised to act." The federal investigation by Attorney General Eric Holder will move forward.
"It was hard for any one of us as a human being ... and as a parent" death of 12-year-old boy in Chicago.
"Here in this city, change is happening right now ... because the people willed it to happen," cites end of stop-and-frisk as example.
Police Commissioner Bratton has made it clear that "the department will act aggressively to ensure any officer not meant to be in this line of work" will be removed.
"Not every change can happen overnight but ... there is a momentum of change that will be felt in every neighborhood of the city."
"This is not just a demand coming from the African American community ... it's coming from all people ... who want violence to end, for not family to have to go through what the Garner family" went through.
"Don't sully [Garner's] name with violence or vandalism ... The only thing that has every worked is peaceful protest ... and the Garner family has made that abundantly clear."
"Dr. King said ... Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere."
"Anyone who believes in the values of this country should feel a call of action now. It is a moment that change must happen. change that's as good as the people we represent." -
